Republican Mike Johnson delivered a historic speech before the British Parliament on Tuesday, and he is the first Speaker of the US House of Representatives to address the Council. Johnson spoke as US President Donald Trump harshly criticized America’s most trusted allies, posting overnight that the UK was acting “very stupidly” on national security and ramping up his claims of forcefully seizing Greenland in the Arctic.

“I told the president that I feel my mission here today is to encourage our friends and help calm things down, so to speak,” Johnson told British lawmakers.

Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the new tariffs Trump intends to impose on Greenland “a mistake, especially among old allies,” and questioned Trump’s credibility, saying he agreed last year not to impose more tariffs on members of the bloc.

Trump announced that starting in February, a 10% import tax would be imposed on goods from eight European countries that have rallied around Denmark in the wake of his growing calls for the United States to seize the semi-autonomous Danish territory of Greenland.
