WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump will meet with House Republicans on Tuesday to make sure they agree on their agenda at the start of a crucial midterm election year that could change the course of his final two years in office.

GOP lawmakers are hosting a day-long policy forum at the Kennedy Center, a performing arts venue on the other side of Washington from the Capitol. Its board, full of Trump loyalists, recently voted to rename it the Trump Kennedy Center, though the move faces a challenge in court.

House Republicans gather as they launch their New Year’s agenda, with health care issues in particular haunting the GOP ahead of the midterm elections. A vote on extending expiring health insurance subsidies is expected as soon as this week, and it is not clear whether the president and party will try to block its passage.

Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson, Republican of Los Angeles, are trying to rally Republican lawmakers when GOP leaders have a slim majority in the chamber. At the same time, rank-and-file lawmakers have increasingly felt emboldened enough to resist the wishes of Trump and his leadership, as with the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files.

With Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s resignation effective at midnight Tuesday, Republican leaders now have a 219-213 majority in the House.

The meeting also comes after the Trump administration’s dramatic arrest of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela, which occurred after a months-long US campaign to pressure the now-deposed leader by massing US forces in the waters off South America and bombing boats that were allegedly carrying drugs.

Maduro’s arrest reignites debate over Trump’s powers over Congress to authorize the campaign against Venezuela, although Republican lawmakers in the House of Representatives have been largely supportive of the administration’s efforts there.

Among the topics likely to be discussed Tuesday are strengthening and implementing GOP tax and border legislation, as well as a broader affordability and midterm policy agenda, according to a Republican official who was involved in planning the meeting and insisted on anonymity to discuss it.

Republicans are also considering a potential second tax bill that could pass with party-line votes alone as they face the prospect of a partial government shutdown at the end of the month.

It is unclear why House Republicans chose the Kennedy Center location for their off-campus session. House GOP meetings are generally held in the Capitol Building or at a nearby off-campus location if they are discussing political matters. The spokesman’s office did not respond to a request for further comment.
