WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department said Wednesday it is looking into whether it improperly withheld documents from Jeffrey Epstein’s files after several news organizations reported that some records containing unsubstantiated accusations made by a woman against President Donald Trump were not among those released to the public.

The announcement came after news reports that a trove of records released by the Justice Department did not include several summaries of FBI interviews with an unidentified woman who came forward after Epstein’s 2019 arrest and claimed she had been sexually assaulted by both Trump and Epstein when she was a minor in the 1980s.

“Several individuals and media outlets have recently flagged files related to documents produced for Ghislaine Maxwell to discover her criminal case that they claim appears to be missing,” the Justice Department said in a post on X. “As with all publicly reported documents, the Department is currently reviewing files within this category of production.” Maxwell, a longtime Epstein confidant, is serving a 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking.

She said that if any document was found to have been improperly withheld and complies with federal law mandating the release of files, “the department will, of course, release it, consistent with the law.”

The debate revolves around a series of interviews said to have been conducted in 2019 with a woman who made an allegation against Trump, who has consistently denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein. News reports in recent days say the FBI interviewed the accused four times as it sought to evaluate her story, but only a summary of one of those interviews was included in files that were made public.

The missing records were previously reported by journalist Roger Sullenberger on Substack and NPR, and have since been documented by other news organizations, including the New York Times, MS Now and CNN.

Representative Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, said in a statement that Democrats on the committee would investigate the withheld records. He said he reviewed unredacted evidentiary records and “can confirm that the Department of Justice appears to have unlawfully withheld FBI interviews” with the defendant.

The Justice Department said last month it would release more than 3 million pages of records related to Epstein, who committed suicide in a New York prison cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. The department said at the time that although it was trying to be transparent, it also had the right to withhold records that revealed potential victims of abuse, were duplicates or protected by legal privileges, or were related to an ongoing criminal investigation.

“Some of the documents contain untrue and sensationalized allegations against President Trump that were made to the FBI immediately prior to the 2020 election,” the department said in a statement last month when it released the records. “To be clear, these allegations are baseless and false, and if they had a shred of credibility, they would certainly have been used as a weapon against President Trump.”

It was quickly revealed that the redaction process was flawed, with the administration withdrawing some material identified by victims or their lawyers, along with a “large number” of documents the government had independently identified.

Lawyers for Epstein’s accusers told a New York judge this month that the lives of nearly 100 victims had been “turned upside down” by sloppy redactions in the government’s latest release of records. The exposed material included nude photographs showing the faces of potential victims as well as names, email addresses and other identifying information that was not redacted or completely redacted.

Other unsubstantiated allegations against Trump and other public figures are included in publicly available filings. The department did not say in its social media post on Wednesday why it was withholding records related to this specific accusation.
