WATCH: Senator Schiff asks Noem to justify her claims of ‘domestic terrorism’ after shooting in Minnesota

Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., questioned Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem at an oversight hearing held by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

The senator focused on comments made by Noem following the killing of two American citizens, Renee Judd and Alex Peretti, at the hands of federal agents weeks apart in Minneapolis. Noem accused Judd and Pretty of committing acts of “domestic terrorism,” despite bystander videos that contradict the Trump administration’s accounts of the deadly shootings.

I asked Schiff where she got the information that the two people were involved in domestic terrorism.

Noem said, as she did earlier in the hours-long hearing, that those initial reports came from agents on the ground, and she described a “chaotic scene.”

Schiff wondered if there was any basis for her “sensational claim.”

Noem dodged the question, saying the FBI was leading the ongoing investigation.

“How is the public supposed to believe anything your agency says or finds?” Schiff said, noting that the administration is preventing local and international investigators from conducting their own investigations into these deadly accidents.

Noem’s agency has witnessed unrest and public anger in recent days. Greater scrutiny by Democrats of the ways the Trump administration is implementing its mass deportation agenda has led to a decline in funding for the agency and a partial government shutdown.

Lawmakers in Congress have yet to reach an agreement to fund the department, though there are areas of bipartisan agreement, such as body camera requirements for immigration enforcement officers.

Noem will also field questions Wednesday from the House Judiciary Committee.
