WASHINGTON (AP) — Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado holds a news conference Friday, a day after she presented the Nobel Peace Prize medal to President Donald Trump at the White House.
The press conference is expected to begin at 11 a.m. EST. Watch the live stream in the player above.
The gift came at a time when Trump questioned Machado’s credibility to rule her country after the United States ousted then-President Nicolas Maduro.
The Nobel Institute said Machado could not give her prize to Trump, an honor he had desired. Even if the gesture proved to be purely symbolic, it was unusual given that Trump effectively sidelined Machado, who has long been the face of the resistance in Venezuela. He expressed his willingness to work with Acting President Delcy Rodriguez, who was Maduro’s second-in-command.

“I presented the president of the United States with the medal, the Nobel Peace Prize,” Machado told reporters after leaving the White House and heading to Capitol Hill. She said she did so “in recognition of his unique commitment to our freedom.”
Trump later confirmed on social media that Machado had left the medal for him to keep, and said it was an honor to meet her.
Trump said in his post: “She is an amazing woman who has suffered a lot. Maria gave me the Nobel Peace Prize for the work I did.” “This is a wonderful gesture of mutual respect. Thank you, Maria!”

The White House later released a photo of Machado standing next to Trump in the Oval Office, holding the medal in a large frame. “Presented as a personal token of gratitude on behalf of the Venezuelan people in recognition of the principled and decisive work of President Trump to secure a free Venezuela,” text in the frame says.
Trump raised doubts about his declared commitment to support democratic rule in Venezuela, and did not mention a timetable regarding the possible date for holding elections. Machado noted that he provided few details on this front during their discussion.
