Watch: Trump announces an agreement with EMD Serono to reduce the prices of fertility drugs

President Donald Trump made an announcement Thursday from the Oval Office that EMD Serono will lower the cost of fertility drugs in an effort to help make IVF more affordable.

The president said his administration had concluded an agreement with the pharmaceutical company to reduce the cost of drugs, including Junal-F and Pergovris.

It is the third deal the administration has struck with drug companies to lower drug prices in recent weeks.

Trump said he was initiated into the whole issue of affordability of IVF treatments because of an Alabama Supreme Court case from 2024, which said frozen embryos could be considered children under state law — a decision that at the time raised serious questions about the treatment used to enable people to become parents.

In their February 2024 ruling, the justices said that an 1872 Alabama law enabling parents to sue for the wrongful death of a minor child “applies to all unborn children, regardless of their location.”

The ruling in LePage v. Center for Reproductive Medicine temporarily halted in vitro fertilization services in the state and became politically controversial as states grappled with the implications of a 2022 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down abortion rights in the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

Trump said in remarks while laying out his plans to reduce IVF costs that Sen. Katie Britt, Republican of Alabama, got him started on the issue by drawing his attention to the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that Trump… While campaigning for president in 2024, Trump declared his support for IVF as a result.

By December 2024, the judge dismissed the wrongful death claim that led to the Alabama Supreme Court ruling.

In response to a question about conservatives criticizing his support for artificial insemination on religious grounds, Trump said he was not aware of such views.

“I think this is very pro-life,” he said in his Oval Office announcement, which included a deal to make fertility medication cheaper and new guidance to encourage employers to offer IVF coverage. “You can’t get more pro-life than this.”
