Watch: Trump attacks the Federal Reserve in his speech to the Detroit Economic Club

US President Donald Trump criticized the Federal Reserve during a speech in Detroit on Thursday.

The president essentially accused the Fed of stealing his joy by not being optimistic about cutting interest rates.

“If you announce big numbers, they raise interest rates,” Trump said in his speech. “When the market goes up, they have to lower interest rates.”

Trump disagreed sharply with the interest rate strategy of the independent Federal Reserve, headed by Jerome Powell, and pushed for faster rate cuts. He asserts that a rising stock market should prompt the Fed to lower benchmark interest rates in order to further boost economic growth.

But the Fed has the legal responsibility to maintain price stability and maximize employment. Lowering interest rates as Trump has proposed could push more money into the US economy and further worsen inflation.

Trump says he plans to announce the health care plan this week

The president has not specified when he will announce his plan, but he and Republicans are under increasing pressure to address Americans’ health care costs, especially since subsidies for those who get coverage under the Affordable Care Act expired at the end of last year.

Trump reiterated his desire to send money directly to consumers to purchase health insurance instead of sending money to insurance companies.

He also touted his agreements with several drug manufacturers to lower prescription drug costs in the United States, and said his party should win this year’s midterm elections on that alone.

“We must win the midterm elections by a landslide,” he said.
