Brown University Dean Frank Doyle said final exams were taking place in the engineering building on Saturday afternoon when the shooter opened fire.
President Donald Trump said late in the afternoon that he had been briefed on the shooting.
“May God have mercy on the victims and the families of the victims!” He said on his social media site.
Smiley asked for prayers for the families of the victims, as the Christmas holiday approaches. “The rest of the day is going to be tough, and the days and months ahead are tough as this community recovers,” the mayor said.
The city mayor refused to say whether the victims were students.
