Watch: Trump criticizes Indiana Senate Republicans’ rejection of redistricting efforts

After Republican lawmakers in Indiana joined Democrats to vote to reject a plan to redraw the state’s congressional map on Thursday, President Donald Trump said he would support a primary against the state’s Republican Senate leader.

The 31-19 vote in the state Senate rejected a congressional redistricting effort that Trump had been pushing Republicans to support in order to help preserve their majority in the U.S. House of Representatives after the 2026 midterm elections.

Twenty-one Republicans joined 10 Democrats in opposing new district lines that would have given Republicans two additional seats.

When Liz Landers, White House correspondent for PBS News Hour, asked Trump about his reaction to the vote, the president criticized Senate President Pro Tempore Roderick Pry.

“I heard he was against it,” Trump said. “He’ll probably lose his next primary, whenever that happens. I hope he does, because he’s done a tremendous disservice.”

Trump later added that he would “certainly support anyone who wants to stand against him.”

After the vote, Bray said in a statement that while Republicans in the state Senate want to see a GOP majority in Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, “the issue before us today is how to get there, and many members of my caucus do not believe that redrawing the congressional map mid-session is a surefire way for Indiana — or our country — to achieve that outcome.”
