Watch: Trump is “completely ashamed” of “some” Supreme Court justices after the tariff decision

US President Donald Trump on Friday criticized the US Supreme Court for overturning global tariffs he imposed using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

“I am ashamed of some members of the court,” the president said during a press conference at the White House. “I am completely ashamed that they do not have the courage to do what is right for our country.”

He praised Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Brett Kavanaugh for their dissent in the court’s 6-3 decision, saying he was “very proud of these justices.”

He later added that the decision was an embarrassment to the families of Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, both of whom were nominated by Trump to the Supreme Court and joined the majority in opposing his tariffs.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the court’s majority opinion that the president “asserts extraordinary authority to unilaterally impose tariffs of unlimited amount, duration, and scope. In light of the breadth, history, and constitutional context of that asserted authority, he must establish clear congressional authorization for its exercise.”

The president said during the press conference that he intends to activate other federal laws to impose customs duties.

Trump also claimed, without evidence, that it was his “opinion” that the Supreme Court was “influenced by foreign interests.” When asked by reporters to expand on that and provide evidence, the president said he believes “foreign interests are represented by people who I believe have undue influence, and have significant influence, on the Supreme Court, whether it be through fear or respect or friendships.”
