President Donald Trump offered a changed explanation for the presence of Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, during last week’s FBI search of the main election center in Fulton County, Georgia.

Gabbard said in a letter to lawmakers earlier this week that she attended the inspection at Trump’s request. But Trump confirmed Thursday, while speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast, that Gabbard “came in at Pam’s insistence.” This is a reference to Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Gabbard’s arrival in Georgia raised immediate questions among Democratic officials because the FBI’s search of the election center was a law enforcement activity, not an intelligence activity, and because the position of director of national intelligence typically focuses on foreign threats rather than domestic concerns.

Deputy District Attorney Todd Blanche said he did not know why Gabbard was there and that she was not part of the FBI investigation. He also said it’s an important part of the administration’s efforts to protect the integrity of the election.
