WATCH: Trump says he’ll revoke church’s tax-exempt status if leaders say something bad about him

President Donald Trump on Thursday falsely claimed to have repealed a provision in the U.S. tax code that prohibited 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, including churches, from endorsing or opposing political candidates.

“People like me and a lot of people want to hear from the secretaries,” Trump said. “They want to hear from the priests. They want to hear from them. I have been banned from talking about very important things like who will be elected.”

The President made the remarks during the 74th National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC

During Trump’s first term in 2017, he signed an executive order directing the Treasury Department to make room for churches and other organizations regarding political speech. Last year, the IRS created a narrow exception, allowing a house of worship to directly endorse political candidates for its congregants “in connection with religious services through the usual channels of communication on religious matters.”

“We worked hard to get rid of the Johnson Amendment,” he said. “It’s gone to the point where you can say anything you want.”

“Now, if you say something bad about Trump, I will change my mind, and your tax-exempt status will be revoked immediately,” Trump added, drawing laughter from the audience.
