Watch: Trump says ‘people will be shocked’ but he and Mamdani want to see ‘the same thing’

It was assumed that President Donald Trump’s meeting with New York City’s mayor-elect could be a fiery display of opposites, but the president was full of praise — and pledges of cooperation — for Zahran Mamdani.

There were playful pats on the arm as Mamdani stood next to Trump sitting at a desk, facing reporters.

There were smiles and handshakes. Color rose to Mamdani’s cheeks when he was asked if he still thought Trump was a fascist, as he had previously suggested — and Trump told him it was “okay” to just say “yes,” which Mamdani did.

Trump, a New York City native who, despite now residing in Florida, expressed his lifelong love for the city. He also said he would be “very, very comfortable” to return there, especially now that he’s met Mamdani, and that he would help the new mayor succeed.

“Ultimately, this is for the good of New York,” Trump said of the two men’s goals. “I don’t care about affiliations, parties or anything else… If he can achieve amazing success, I will be very happy.”

Trump expects he and Mamdani to agree on the crime

Trump said he and Mamdani discussed crime in New York City, without getting involved in their political differences over Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“What we did is we discussed crime, more than ICE itself, we discussed crime. He doesn’t want to see a crime and I don’t want to see a crime,” Trump said. “I have no doubt that we will not agree on this issue.”
