President Donald Trump said the United States will “run” Venezuela until there is a safe transition of power and the United States will have a “partnership” with the Venezuelan oil industry.

“We will run the country until such time as we can make a safe, sound and wise transition. And it must be wise because this is what we all seek. We want peace, freedom and justice for the great people of Venezuela,” he said on Saturday.

Trump addressed the nation after the United States captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and flown him out of the country in a military operation early in the day that removed a sitting leader from office.

The arrest was the culmination of months of mounting pressure from the Trump administration on the oil-rich South American country.

Trump was accompanied at the press conference by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth; Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and Stephen Miller, a senior White House aide overseeing homeland security matters.

Trump said the United States is now evaluating next steps for Venezuela.

Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores, who were taken overnight from their home on a military base, were on board a US warship on their way to New York, where they were due to face criminal charges.

The Ministry of Justice issued a new indictment on Saturday against Maduro and his wife, accusing them of participating in a drug-related terrorist conspiracy.

The legal basis for the attack, which resembles the 1990 US invasion of Panama that led to the surrender and arrest of leader Manuel Antonio Noriega, was not immediately clear.

The US government does not recognize Maduro, who last appeared on state television on Friday while meeting with a delegation of Chinese officials in Caracas.
