NEW YORK (AP) — After chants of “Run again!” Former Vice President Kamala Harris filled the room, telling African American activists on Friday that she is actively considering another presidential bid.

“Maybe I will. I’m thinking about it,” Harris told Rev. Al Sharpton after he asked her directly if she would run for president in 2028.

Harris’ comments came during the National Action Network’s annual conference, where more than a half-dozen potential candidates emerged this week, hoping to make inroads among Black voters — who make up one of the Democrats’ strongest blocs.

The next Democratic presidential primary season won’t begin in earnest until after the midterm elections in November, but this week’s convention showcased a group of Democrats already vying for office in what promises to be a crowded contest.

For now, at least, there is no clear candidate and early favorite. But there appears to be a favorite in Sharpton’s conference.

Harris, the nation’s first Black female vice president and the Democrats’ 2024 presidential nominee, received a standing ovation and the largest crowd of any 2028 candidate this week.

Sharpton noted that Harris received more votes in her losing 2024 campaign than even former Democratic presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.

“Whatever you decide to do, you have achieved a point in history,” Sharpton said.

Harris has raised the possibility of another presidential bid before in the 15 months since leaving office. She also recently launched a political action committee and began traveling across the United States supporting Democrats, especially across the South.

However, some in the party have shifted their focus to a new generation of Democratic leaders given Harris’ struggles in the recent presidential contest.

This week’s convention lineup included Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Rep. Ro Khanna of California, and Arizona Sens. Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego.

Buttigieg, who spoke shortly after Harris left the stage, received quiet applause from a room that was nearly half empty. Some cheered when he mentioned support for federal workers and minority businesses, but many attendees filed out of the crowded hall after Harris’ speech to try to take a selfie with the former vice president.

Buttigieg, like several other 2028 candidates this week, scoffed at a question about whether he would seek the presidency again.

Harris was more clear.

“I’m thinking about it,” she repeated three times when Sharpton asked her about running for the White House in 2028.

“I served for four years and was a heartbeat away from the presidency of the United States,” Harris said. “I spent countless hours in my office in the West Wing just steps from the Oval Office. I spent countless hours in the Oval Office and the Situation Room. I know what the job is, and I know what it takes.”

She continued: “I’m thinking about it in the context of who, where and how to do the best work for the American people. That’s the way I think about it. I’ll keep you posted.”
