President Donald Trump said Tuesday he did not believe Alex Peretti, the second U.S. citizen killed by federal forces in Minnesota this month, was acting like a killer.

“You can’t have guns. You can’t walk in with guns,” the president said in response to a question from PBS News’ Liz Landers, repeating a talking point from the administration that Peretti should not bring a legally carried gun to the scene — a stance that has drawn outrage from gun rights advocates.

The president’s response was a softening of his administration’s tone on the Jan. 24 shooting, after several of his senior aides, including White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, described Peretti as a threat to federal agents.

After Pretty’s death, gun rights groups issued statements, saying it is legal to carry firearms during protests or while exercising First Amendment rights.

Landers asked Trump about the Second Amendment, which protects the right to keep and bear arms.

“It is a very unfortunate incident,” Trump said before leaving the White House to deliver a speech in Iowa.
