Wayne Rooney: Alexander Isak should be worried about Hugo Ekiteke’s form at Liverpool

Ekitiki (23 years old) scored two goals to lead Liverpool to victory over Newcastle at Anfield on Saturday, raising his tally to 15 goals from 32 matches in all competitions this season.

Rooney said their blossoming partnership leaves questions about where Isaac – who completed a British record £125m transfer to Liverpool from Newcastle – will fit in when he returns from a broken leg.

The 26-year-old Sweden international scored three goals in 16 appearances for Liverpool before being sidelined in December.

“I would be more worried if I were Isaac, sitting there watching,” Rooney said in the latest episode of The Wayne Rooney Show, which you can listen to now on BBC Sounds.

He added: “His career at Liverpool has not taken off yet. It is clear that they paid a lot of money for him and these two.” [Wirtz and Ekitike] They seem to have a good understanding of each other’s game and appear to be a real threat.

“The second goal for Ekitiki in particular was fantastic, it reminds me of Romero. A small toe-kick goal but instinctive.

“He’s the type of player I like to watch. He’s not a number nine, he’s not a number 10. He drifts wide, gets the ball, gets players into the game and can score goals. So he’s got a little bit of everything really.”
