Wayne Rooney on Max Doman: ‘He could be a Premier League winner with Arsenal while still finishing school’

But times have changed.

“We’re on social media now,” Rooney said. “People will message him on Instagram or Twitter, or whatever it is. You’ll see it everywhere.”

“So I don’t think he would have slept for long hours [on Saturday night] Because I’m sure he’ll be awake to watch it.

“It’s different now, different age when I was coming in. There was no social media back then.

“So it was all about the newspapers and whether you liked them or not – the front page and the back page. I guess you don’t get as much scrutiny these days.”

Rooney also praised Doman’s attitude.

Rooney said: “It seems, from the matches I have watched, that he does not let that pressure affect him because he gets the ball, holds on to it, passes defenders, goes to dribble them, so it definitely seems that he has confidence in him.”

“Mikel Arteta, some of the big players in the Arsenal team, won’t let him get ahead of himself. But I think you have to enjoy it too.

“Sometimes people think that enjoying success is arrogant, and I think they do [USA]. They enjoy it and celebrate it.

“So when we have a young man like this who is 16 years old, he obviously has a lot of potential and we just hope he can fulfill that potential.”

“Let him enjoy it and go and express himself.”
