Rooney said he had “no doubt” about Rosenior’s ability to do a good job at Chelsea.
Enzo Maresca has left his position at the Blues after 18 months in charge, following a dispute with the club’s owners.
Rosenior last worked in the Premier League as a player for Brighton in 2017.
As a right-back, he had a solid but unspectacular playing career – also appearing in the Championship for Fulham, Reading and Hull.
He spent almost half of his career in the Premier League, and this is where his coaching career began.
After a spell as Brighton’s Under-23s coach, he spent three years at Derby – where he worked under Philippe Cocu before Rooney.
“He also has a team you don’t want to pass too,” Rooney said.
“That’s important too. If he gets in there, he won’t be disappointed. He’s been waiting for an opportunity like this.”
“If you don’t accept it now, you’ll never accept it. And I think he’s finished his apprenticeship, done his work to try to get into this job.”
“So he will have no doubts that he can do the job. Hopefully we will hear very soon that he is the coach, because for young English coaches I think it is massive.”
“We don’t really see English coaches at the big clubs. So he will lead the way for us.”
The only English coaches currently in the Premier League are Newcastle’s Eddie Howe, Burnley’s Scott Parker, and Nottingham Forest’s Sean Dyche.
