Edwards would not have been eligible for Wales had he left to play for England because he played only seven Tests.

The current WRU selection policy states that individuals who sign for clubs outside Wales must have 25 caps to continue playing for their country.

Edwards, who started his career at Cwmafan RFC, is set to captain Steve Tandy’s side in the Six Nations after committing to the Ospreys.

“Like a lot of the boys here, I grew up supporting this club and it has always been a dream of mine to pull on the black shirt,” said the player who will make his 43rd appearance for the club in Zebre in the Challenge Cup on .

“There’s a good group of boys here. We’ve got a young core playing above their years and some experienced boys who bring it all together for us.

“We have shown that when we are on our game, we can compete with anyone on our day.

“All the staff and players here want the Ospreys to get back to where we should be, competing with the top teams and challenging for silverware. So if I can play a part in that, that’s something I will strive to do.”

However, the Ospreys’ future remains uncertain amid rumors that owners Y11 Sports and Media are in talks to buy the WRU-owned Cardiff club.

Such a move would help the governing body – which would honor existing contracts and also ensure new contracts signed by players of national interest – narrow down the coveted three-man professional clubs.
