In the evening session, John Higgins, a former five-time Welsh Open winner, defeated China’s Liu Wenwei 4-1, the same score recorded by England’s Dave Gilbert when he beat Northern Ireland’s Robbie McGuigan.

Liam Bullen (20) and Sam Craigie notched another two shocks in the opening round.

Bolin, ranked 84th in the world, defeated Chris Wakelin, ranked 13th, 4-3, to reach the second round.

The same result befell Elliot Slessor, whose 21st place in the world rankings meant little with Craigie, 89th, leading the way.

There was no surprise in the final two matches on Tuesday, with Stuart Bingham beating Gao Yang 4-2, and Kyren Wilson beating Hongyu Liu 4-1.
