Member clubs have called an extraordinary general meeting of the WRU amid uncertainty over plans affecting Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets.

The FA intends to have one club in the east, one in Cardiff and one in the west, sparking unrest, protests and legal action.

WRU chief executive Abbie Tierney admitted she “didn’t feel safe” in her job due to social media abuse, and Jewell said the committee recognized WRU bosses had faced harsh criticism that was “unjustifiably harsh”.

But Plaid Cymru MS added: “The WRU must realize it has lost the debate over the future of the professional game.

“We are disturbed to hear from you [Collier-Keywood] Tell us you don’t have a backup plan if your current proposals don’t progress as planned.

“If this is the case, it would represent a significant dereliction of duty. We urge you to find an alternative approach that continues to bring financial stability to the Association and maintains confidence, while rebuilding trust with clubs and fans.”

Collier-Keywood admitted last week that the governing body had struggled to include professional teams in its plans.

The WRU boss, who appeared alongside Community Game Director Geraint John and Senior Independent Director Alison Thorne, confirmed that financial difficulties meant the three-team model was the only way forward for the game.

“The people of Wales feel a deep sense of ownership, pride and emotional connection to the game. This connection must be respected and nurtured,” Jewell wrote.

“The Union must find itself in a position not to win the vote, but to lose the spirit of Welsh rugby.”
