What is the impact of WSL relegation on Leicester City?

Captain Sam Tierney told BBC Radio Leicester before Saturday’s defeat that the club had not met expectations and a “full review” would be needed – and Passmore echoed that sentiment.

“As a club we need to take a look and review,” Passmore said. “We need to reset things.”

“What is our vision? What is our strategy? These things will drive your leadership team and your culture. This applies to performance.”

“We have to explain everything within that.”

There are already questions about whether the women’s team will continue to play at the King Power Stadium in WSL 2.

Following the men’s relegation to the top flight, there is more financial pressure on the club and the women’s team will now receive much less broadcast revenue than they would have been competing in the top flight.

This means that the player budget and wages are likely to decrease alongside this, so contract renewal discussions will be more difficult.

Players are uncertain about their future, while Leicester may struggle to retain their best talent.

“We have literally not been informed of anything or any changes yet,” Passmore said.

“We have supported the club since I came in early September. We knew it was going to be a challenge. The women’s game is progressing, and the WSL is a big ask to continue to be involved in.

“We need to make sure we have consistency across the women’s section of the club so we can build.”

In the near future, Leicester are preparing to play in the World Sevens Series next week, which could provide a financial boost with a total of £1.1 million available from the prize pool.

“World Sevens is a different format and shines a light on the game in a different way, showing the personalities and character of the players,” Passmore said.

“There are also potential investors and this is a great opportunity. I might be sitting in the background crying! But it’s an opportunity for players to be themselves.”
