After the 2-0 win over St Mirren, Hibs boss David Gray was still favoring looking to catch Motherwell in a top-four finish that would secure European football.
“All we can do is take care of ourselves,” Gray said. “We’re three points closer to Motherwell, I know they’ll be playing tomorrow and they’ve got another game in hand.”
United coach Jim Goodwin knows there is a challenge ahead, but he still firmly believes it is possible for his team to finish sixth.
“We all realized the importance of the match,” he said after his team’s important victory away from home.
“We closed the gap on Falkirk by three points and have two games in hand on them.
“If we can perform like this – on the attacking front – in the coming weeks, we give ourselves a good chance of continuing this fight for the top six.
“Even though we have given ourselves a mountain to climb, we will not stop trying.”
At Aberdeen, where Peter Levein confirmed he would take over as interim coach until the end of the season, he made clear his goal during his time in charge.
“The top six are still possible,” he said. “That’s what we should be aiming for. The last time I was in charge, we had a good unbeaten run, so hopefully I can get back to that level.”
