The Golden Boot award has been won by some of the biggest names in football throughout its 59-year history.

Portugal legend Eusebio won the inaugural cup in 1968, scoring 42 goals for Benfica. Then he won the award for the second time in 1972-1973.

Argentine legend Lionel Messi has won the most Golden Boots, collecting the award on six occasions during his 17-year spell at Barcelona.

Messi achieved the record for the most goals scored in one season with 50 goals in the 2011-12 season (100 points), as well as being the first and only player so far to win it in three consecutive seasons from 2016-2019.

Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo won the award for the first time in the 2007-2008 season with Manchester United, before winning it three other times with Real Madrid.

The first player to win the award while playing for an English club was Ian Rush in the 1983-1984 season, when he scored 32 goals for Liverpool.

The award has been won by a different player in each of the past three seasons.

Haaland won the award for the first time in the 2022-23 season, setting a record in the English Premier League with 36 goals (72 points), while Kane won his first Golden Boot with the same total with Bayern the following year.

Mbappé is the current recipient of the award after scoring 31 goals (62 points) for Real Madrid in the 2024-25 season.

The same trio is competing for the top spot again this season, with Kane at the top.
