Why has no English coach won the English Premier League?

Since the Premier League’s inception nearly 34 years ago, one of its biggest anomalies has been that no English names have appeared in the managerial honors list as winners.

Howard Wilkinson, now 82 and a longtime elder statesman, was the last Englishman to lift the title with Leeds United in the 1991-92 season, but in the league’s previous guise as a top flight.

Since then, 12 managers have led their team to win the Premier League, but no English coach has been able to achieve the coveted title, a list dominated by Scottish Sir Alex Ferguson, proud of 13 victories and the six titles achieved by Catalan Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

Rosenior (41 years old) is currently the fourth permanent English coach in the English Premier League after moving from Strasbourg, joining Nottingham Forest coach Sean Dyche, Newcastle United coach Eddie Howe, and Burnley coach Scott Parker.

Michael Carrick will take over from sacked Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, but only until the end of the season, and the Old Trafford giants have a long way to go to return to their title aspirations.

This small proportion of English managers in the Premier League lags far behind the accepted top five leagues in Europe when it comes to national representation.

16 out of 20 Serie A managers in Italy are Italian, 11 out of 20 in Spain are Spanish, 12 out of 18 in Germany are German, and 10 out of 18 in France are French.

Including caretakers and caretaker appointments, there have been 92 non-British and Irish managers in the history of the Premier League.

The current table is topped by Arsenal, led by Mikel Arteta, followed by Guardiola in Manchester City and Unai Emery, coach of Aston Villa – three Spaniards.

So why has the Premier League eluded English managers, and can anyone end this drought?
