New York State has a high tax rate, but the cost of living in Oneida County is lower than the national average.
Located between Albany and Syracuse in central New York State, Oneida County has a rich and storied history. Established by the New York State Legislature in 1798, the county captured international attention in the 18th and 19th centuries, especially from Europe, thanks to the abundance of furry animals in its expansive forests.
Oneida County has a population of 229,645 and a median age of 40.8, so nearly half of Oneida residents are either looking forward to retirement or enjoying it to the fullest.
The great outdoors
Without leaving your seat, you can enjoy a visit to beautiful Oneida County and the surrounding New York countryside. Utica, one of Oneida’s major cities and the county seat, is home to the Adirondack Railroad, which covers 70 miles of track. About 70,000 people annually enjoy its many excursions, often based on holiday and seasonal themes. The railway also connects to boat tours and hiking trails if you want to get out and enjoy the fresh air.
Some of its popular rides include the Polar Express, Fall Gateway, and Beer & Wine Train, which also offers local entertainment.
Oneida cities and what to do there
Gambling is a favorite pastime in Oneida County, so this could be a fun place if you want to roll the dice or think about some cards in your newfound free time. The state describes the hobby as “the largest non-governmental, non-healthcare product in Oneida County.” Turning Stone Casino Resort is hosted by the Oneida Indian Nation, the largest private employer in the county.
Oneida’s quieter offerings for leisure include admiring the stunning architecture of Utica’s Union Station. Catch a show, two or more at the Stanley Center for the Arts, or visit the exhibitions presented by the Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute. Utica also offers tours of Matt Brewing Company if you want to enjoy a little hand-brewed beer.
Finally, Oneida County offers 90 entertainment and arts organizations, as of 2024 data. You must have a lot to do in your free time here.
Getting around and out of town(s)
Oneida County has long been considered traveler-friendly. Rome provided land transportation between major waterways for people traveling west in the 19th century, as well as routes for transporting goods and material possessions. The county is home to 3,262 miles of highway infrastructure as of 2025.
Oneida serves the Griffiss International Airport if you want to get out of town and go some distance, perhaps if your family is staying more than a comfortable drive away.
However, driving and flying are not options for all seniors, and the county stands ready to help if you are one of them. The Office of Aging and Continuing Care provides transportation services to those age 60 or older who are not receiving Medicaid and who need to receive medical care. Drivers are provided through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
Day trip to Lake Ontario
Water lovers can easily access Lake Ontario, part of the Great Lakes and one of the largest lakes in the world. State parks with lakeshore access are just over an hour’s drive from Rome or Utica.
Citizen services and health care
Availability of quality health care can be a concern for seniors and is often a factor when considering transportation. Oneida County is home to 14 hospitals and 373 health care facilities, including Rome Memorial Hospital and Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare in Utica.
However, the county goes far beyond providing health care assistance to seniors. Oneida also offers assistance to those who find themselves raising or caring for a younger generation through the Grandparents & Kinship Caregivers program. It is also provided by the Office of Aging and Continuing Care.
Bill Payer will help provide guidance if you’re struggling to get a handle on your budget and finances, and the Legal Services Program stands ready for those 60 and older who cannot afford legal services. This program can help with issues such as wills, powers of attorney, health care proxies, and landlord/tenant issues.
How much will all this cost you?
First, the bad news: The Institute for Economic Research notes that New York has the ninth-highest tax rate in the United States. It taxes IRAs, pensions, and 401(k) income and withdrawals, but not Social Security benefits.
However, the overall cost of living in Utica and Rome is fairly low. It’s 9% lower than the national average in Utica and 3% lower if you choose Rome. Food, housing, and health care expenses are all below the U.S. average. The only cost that is higher than average in my city in Oneida County is transportation. It generally costs about $1,197 per month in the county for two adults without children.
