Gary Caldwell believes Wigan Athletic will see a much better manager a decade on from his last spell in charge after being appointed by the club for a second time.
Caldwell (43 years old) chose to leave Exeter City and return to Wigan, where he previously spent six seasons as a player and 18 months coaching the team, starting in April 2015.
He told BBC Radio Lancashire: “I’m very different from when I left this club 10 years ago. The experiences I’ve had, whether good or bad, have shaped me as a coach.”
“The work I have done in three-and-a-half years at Exeter shows that I can achieve what I have and I must do the same again here to get us out of this situation.
“I came back because I love the football club and I think the club should be in a better position than it is now. I think I can help take the club to a higher level in the league, and even more so in the future, take them out of this league and back into the Premier League.”
Caldwell played 100 Premier League games for Wigan and as captain led them to a surprise FA Cup victory at Wembley against Manchester City in 2013.
After hanging up his boots in the 2014-15 season, he accepted the challenge of trying to keep the relegation-threatened Latics side in the Championship.
Although he was unable to achieve this, Caldwell took them back to their first league title in 2016, but lost his job in October of that year after a poor start to the following season.
Caldwell had spells at Chesterfield and Partick Thistle before taking over at Exeter in 2022, making 180 appearances at St James’ Park.
Wigan, who lost 4-0 to Arsenal in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday, have been without a permanent manager since parting ways with Ryan Lowe on February 7.
Caldwell inherits a team that is without a win in the league in eight games, having lost its last four, and is 22nd in the league table, one point away from safety. The duration of his contract was not revealed.
A club statement described his return, external As an “exciting new chapter” in Wigan’s history.
