Eight clubs – counting teams that were in League One in their last season at their old stadium and their first at their new stadium, excluding temporary homes – have changed stadiums since 1992–93, but only one club finished the following season with an improved record.
Derby County went from averaging 1.6 points per game in their final year at the Baseball Ground to an impressive 2.1 points as they adapted brilliantly to their first campaign at Pride Park in 1997-98.
Middlesbrough had an identical record between Ayresome Park and Riverside, but the other teams all suffered declines.
It was not always likely that Spurs would be able to match White Hart Lane’s impressive final run of 17 wins and two draws when they moved to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after a spell at Wembley.
But seven years later, they are still trying to establish themselves as a place teams fear to come to, with some pundits claiming it is too welcoming a stadium for opposition players. Only Wolves have lost more home games in Europe’s top five leagues this season than Tottenham, with eight.
West Ham saw an immediate decline in their first season at the London Stadium, dropping by an average of half a point per game. Their plight at the vast, unpopular former athletics ground has been well documented, with fans yearning for the intimidating atmosphere of Upton Park.
It was a similar story for Southampton after they left the tight confines of the Dell for St Mary’s.
Everton are just 0.2 points per game behind their final season at Goodison, but given their last win over Hill Dickinson came on December 6, they have some work to do to reverse that trend given they face Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City before the end of the season.
