England has not played any official match since winning the UEFA Euro 2025, where it defeated China 8-0 and Ghana 2-0 in friendly matches at the end of last year.

Before that, they were beaten 2-1 by Brazil on their return home, but recorded a 3-0 win over Australia three days later.

The matches gave Wegman a chance to test new players and formations – making 30-year-old goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse’s debut in the process.

Among those to receive their first call-ups to the team were defenders Anouk Denton and Taylor Hinds and striker Freya Godfrey.

There was also time for England stars Leah Williamson, Lucy Bronze and Lauren James to recover from long-term injuries.

Chelsea defender Millie Bright, who led England to the 2023 World Cup final, announced her retirement in October after withdrawing from the European Championship.

There was a huge blow for Arsenal striker Michelle Agyemang – one of England’s key players in Switzerland – as she was taken off on a stretcher after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in the win over Australia.

But it was a successful time for the other lionesses in the Arsenal squad, including captain Williamson, who lifted the European Champions Cup in February.

Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton was named the best goalkeeper in the world at the Ballon d’Or awards in September, and Wegman also received the best coach award.

Hampton was also named BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year in November after being caught up in the fallout from the Mary Earps biography, which was released earlier that month.
