GB started with the hammer, getting two in the first end, and looked like they might enjoy a comfortable start to the day in Italy.
Estonia responded by doing the same, after a slight error from Dodds with her final stone. “Sorry, Bruce,” said the 34-year-old, who was a bit off-putting again with her third-party opening rock.
But Dodds, outmatched against Norway, righted herself to produce a brilliant final shop and restore the two-point advantage for Great Britain.
Estonia was supposed to equalize again, but Mari Kaldvi’s error ensured they fell behind at the end of the first half. “It was a little rollercoaster,” 2022 Olympic gold medalist Vicki Wright described it.
Kaldvee was again slow on the resumption and Mouat – fueled by a large amount of mango – was delivered with the final stone for GB to extend the lead to 6-3 with three ends remaining.
Estonia – which overcame a four-point deficit at the end of the final against Switzerland in the opener – used its strength in sixth place and went one point behind after capitalizing on a rare favorable error.
GB played their own way back and made full use of it, getting a furious double pass by both Mouat and Dodds and picking up a crucial four points after some deliberation with the measuring stick.
This opened up a five-point gap, convincing the Estonians to shake hands and succumb to defeat before the end of the game.
“That was better than me today,” Mowat told BBC Sport. “I got a few things wrong, but I put myself in the wrong word and moved on.”
“We are very pleased with our performance and excited to get GB off on the right foot.”
