At that stage, the British pair were four points ahead – the second night in a row without much sleep after a quick turnaround from Thursday’s win over the Czech Republic proved no obstacle – but the lead was reduced to 4-3 at the break.

Two more in the fifth end opened up the advantage again before the two teams traded points in the next two to leave Sweden needing four points in the final end to win.

They didn’t get anything, because the ending was empty. Mowat’s stunning throw proved decisive, showing the first pump from the bound Scot and earning him an audience with Snoop moments later.

“Can you say you won beautifully? It was much better than me and I am happy because we are making the opponents play strong shots,” Mowat told BBC Sport.
