On Wednesday, Norwegian broadcaster NRK published a statement from Laegreid in which he apologized to his ex-girlfriend and Putin.
“I deeply regret bringing up this personal story on what was a day of celebration for Norwegian biathlon,” Laegried told NRK – Norway’s state broadcaster.
“I’m not myself these days, and I’m not thinking clearly. My apologies to Johan Olav, who deserved all the attention after winning the gold medal.
“I also extend my apologies to my ex-girlfriend, who inadvertently ended up in the media spotlight. I hope she is doing well.
“I can’t change what happened, but now I will put this behind me and focus on the Olympics. I will not answer any more questions about this matter.”
At a press conference on Tuesday, Laegried said he hoped he would not “ruin” his colleague’s day, but insisted: “I stand by my choice.”
His former teammate, five-time biathlon gold medalist Johannes Thingnes Boe, told Norwegian broadcaster NRK that Laegried was “completely wrong”.
