💡 Key idea:

Edwards exuded positivity, coupled with realism, in his public comments — but it’s the same on a personal level.

The coaching staff see the improvements they want on the training ground, believing the players are fitter and more courageous on the ball – but it does not show in matches.

They had a good week of training before a last-minute defeat to Arsenal, and it’s been the case again this week, with Edwards digging into his message and methods.

He has lamented how the team has forgotten the basics – running, pressing and positional intelligence – and believes the basics in football are not being coached properly anymore.

Edwards will look to begin the rebuild in January, a process that Wolves must embrace but also approach with caution.

They need to get going in the summer but can’t seem to succumb to relegation months before the end of the season.

Players will also have their own agendas.

Joao Gomez, who has not played for Brazil since March, will have hopes of a World Cup place, as will South Korea’s Hwang Hee Chan – who has had limited playing time in the past two months.

Domestic players will be targeted – Wolves have currently filled their non-domestic quota – and the Premier League sought knowledge after the summer as club executives admitted they had bungled the window.

However, Edwards knows that Wolves’ stance will leave some reluctant to join the looming specter of the Championship.

“It should be,” Doherty said [a good transfer window]. We need something, whether it’s the loan market or something else.

“We will need some new energy, I won’t say what position but we need something…

“We will need everyone to reach the level of last season. We were in a difficult position at this time last year as well but it is clearly much worse.”
