Rain prevented the result between Bangladesh and hosts India in the final group stage match of the Women’s World Cup as persistent rain had the final say in Navi Mumbai.

Chasing a revised target of 126 under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method after reducing the match to 27 overs a side, India were 57-0 when the match umpires had to call off the dead rubber.

Smriti Mandhana, the tournament’s highest run-scorer, hit an unbeaten 34 to keep the purple patch alive, but an in-play injury to her opening partner Pratika Rawal will be a major cause for concern for India.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s side, who have already secured their place in the semi-finals, will face defending champions Australia in the semi-finals at the same venue on Thursday as they look to secure their maiden title.

India took an early lead after bowling first in a match initially reduced to 43 overs a side, with Renuka Singh Thakur hitting in the first over to dismiss Bangladesh opener Soumya Akter.

Off-spinner Deepti Sharma then claimed the wicket of Rubya Haider Jhelik in the 10th over before the rain returned in greater intensity to interrupt the proceedings.

After a delay of more than two hours, the fielders returned with the game truncated to 27 overs per side.

Subhana Mustari, who scored an unbeaten 66 against Australia last week, tried to keep the runs flowing, partnering Sharmeen Akter Supta (36), as the duo hit eight of the nine boundaries in Bangladesh’s innings between them.

But once Mustari fell for 26 off 21 balls at 91-4 in the 22nd over, India picked up one wicket every over as Bangladesh struggled to raise the run rate.

India produced a strong response as Mandhana hit six boundaries to reach 34 off 27 balls, but the weather had other plans as it brought about an abrupt end to the contest.
