Women’s T20 World Cup: Ireland are ‘delighted’ to secure qualification says captain Gabby Lewis

While Ireland do not yet know their opponents in the tournament, which will be held in England from June 12, Lewis says it would be “huge” to have the opportunity to play at Lord’s.

Wherever they play, the 24-year-old believes the proximity of the tournament will be beneficial for both players and fans alike.

“I think cricket is definitely emerging in Ireland, and I think the more we can be seen on the world stage, the better young girls will come to watch.

“We’ve had great support in Nepal, and it will no doubt be even greater in England. I think this is probably the closest we’ll get to a World Cup on home soil, so we’re very excited.”

He added: “Normally in World Cups and these major tournaments, you have to go to a preparatory camp and adapt, so playing in similar conditions to Ireland is obviously an advantage for us.”

Ireland will use a tri-series with Pakistan and West Indies in preparation for the tournament at the start of a busy summer for Lewis in particular.

When not on international duty, she will once again represent Lancashire as an overseas player in this year’s One Day Cup.

Lewis will join the team in April, returning to Old Trafford after helping the team to the title last season with an unbeaten 141 not out against Hampshire in the final.

“I think looking back over the last few years, it’s something I really wanted to get involved in, and play at continually higher levels,” she said.

“It was just about getting the opportunity, so I was happy to get the opportunity last September and I was very happy that I was able to take it.

“I’m thrilled the girls have signed with me again and I can’t wait until next summer.”
