England coach Charlotte Edwards said his side “got away with murder” after losing to Pakistan, but insisted their best was yet to come.
Pakistan, bottom of the Women’s World Cup, reduced England to 79-7 and then reached 34-0 in their quest for 113 wins before rain rescued Nat Sciver-Brandt’s side from a horror defeat.
Edwards says they have reflected on that match in Colombo and moved on from it, but will hope to improve on the performance when they face co-hosts India in a crucial match on Sunday.
“We haven’t played our best cricket, which is encouraging for us as a group, and we now have to play against some of the best teams in the world,” Edwards told BBC Sport.
“So I think we are ready to meet this challenge.
“We outplayed Pakistan and we know it, we talked about it. We got away with it, but we have to move on.”
England are in a commanding position to reach the semi-finals and will likely need just one win from their last three matches to confirm their place, but their results so far have impressed, especially in the batting department.
Since the dominant opening win over South Africa, England had cruised to a 78-5 win over Bangladesh, a Sciver-Brunt indie ensured a comfortable win over Sri Lanka, and then came a lucky escape against Pakistan.
“We may not have been able to adapt as well as I would have liked,” Edwards added.
“I think there were some concerns about our batting, but I don’t have many. When I took on this role it was about winning first and foremost, and the only game we didn’t play well was against Pakistan.”
The real test starts now. India have not been consistent so far but are expecting a big crowd in Indore and have beaten England away from home this summer.
On Wednesday there will be a thrilling grudge match, with England taking on defending champions Australia – the first time they have played each other since their Ashes humiliation earlier this year before Edwards took over.
