From 2031, the Women’s World Cup will be contested between 48 teams – in line with the men’s format – and will require 15 stadiums. The tournament will include 104 matches with 48 teams competing over 39 days.
A joint statement from the chief executives of the FA, the Irish FA, the Scottish FA and the FA of Wales said: “The Women’s World Cup UK has the potential to galvanize the women’s and girls’ game both in the UK and globally.
“Our bid also demonstrates our commitment to leaving a lasting legacy, in the lead-up to 2035, and in the years following.”
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: “The Lionesses’ success has inspired girls across our country and we will build on this momentum by welcoming millions of football fans from around the world to a tournament that will benefit communities and businesses in host cities across the UK.”
Scotland coach Melissa Andreatta added: “The impact of bringing the World Cup to our country will be felt for decades, leading to increased participation, investment and equality at every level of the sport.”
England coach Sarina Wegman added: “I think it’s more than just football. It will promote women’s football but it will enhance the role of women in society and, as we have seen, it will bring the country together.”
