📌 Main takeaway:
Wrexham Caye Race Stadium is the world’s oldest international football stadium still in use, having hosted Wales’ first match in 1877.
It has hosted senior men’s and women’s international matches in recent years, but will need to be expanded and modernized for use in the 2035 World Cup.
“Wrexham are building a cup at the moment, but they will have plans to develop that further before 2035,” Mooney added.
“I don’t know the exact number, but I know it will be higher than what we need to host the Women’s World Cup in 2035.
“There has been a lot of support from Wrexham Council, from governments and so on, but as they continue their journey towards the Premier League and with the development of the women’s side of the game, they want the city to continue to develop.
“The infrastructure needs to continue to be developed around it, so the 2035 Women’s World Cup gives them a great opportunity to have something to aim for beyond being in the Premier League.
“And having the World Cup finals played in Wrexham is another wonderful layer to add to a story that has already produced so many wonderful layers for Wrexham.”
As for the potential redevelopment of Cardiff City Stadium, Mooney said: “What could be interesting for us as a national association is that we continue to perform well with the national teams, and hopefully Cardiff City will get promotion this year and a challenge in the Premier League will follow.”
“Hopefully in the future, perhaps we can look to work with Cardiff City Council and the owners of Cardiff City to develop this a little further.
“There is room at both ends to develop capacity there. I would say that is a bit far, but as it stands, Cardiff City is well above the threshold in terms of hosting World Cup matches.
“Obviously the National Stadium in Wales will be, as will Wrexham by then.”
