WordPress’s dynamic coding experience, Telex, has already been used in the real world

WordPress’s experimental AI development tool, Telex, has already been used in the real world, just months after its debut in September. At the company’s annual State of the Word event Tuesday in San Francisco, Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of the WordPress Project and CEO of Automattic, shared several examples where Telex has been used within a working WordPress store to do things like create price comparisons, price calculators, and pull real-time business hours as well as a map link to a retail store, among examples.

Telex, which Mullenweg previously described as “v0 or Lovable, but specifically for WordPress,” is essentially the publishing platform’s attempt to build its own coding tool for the AI ​​age. The software allows developers to create Gutenberg blocks—the standard pieces of text, images, columns, and more—that make up a WordPress website.

While the program is still billed as an experiment, Mullenweg has been able to showcase several real-life examples created by community creator Nick Hamze.

In the first example, Mullenweg demonstrated a price comparison tool built with Telex, noting that these types of rich, interactive web elements were something a developer used to create ad hoc but can now be created in a few seconds.

In another demo, a developer used Telex to add real-time store hours, a phone number, and a link to get directions to the header block of their WordPress site.

Telex was also shown being used to create a carousel of partner logos on the company’s website, a custom pricing widget, Google Calendar integration, and a grid for posts on the WordPress homepage where each post card on the site has the same height.

“Again, the things you used to do, like hiring developers, implementing custom software like this, would have cost thousands, tens of thousands of dollars to build, even just years ago. Now we’re able to do it in a browser for pennies,” Mullenweg said. “It’s kind of crazy.”

Another developer, Tammy Lister, used Telex to create a new Gutenberg block every day in October, creating things like a playable ASCII version of Tetris and a trick-or-treat block for Halloween.

Telex’s demos were discussed alongside other AI-focused initiatives in WordPress, including architectural advancements, such as the Abilities API and the MCP adapter. The former defines what WordPress can do in a way that AI systems can interpret, while the latter exposes those capabilities so any MCP-compliant tool can understand and use them, the company explained.

“This adapter pattern means WordPress can participate in AI workflows without duplicating logic or creating separate integrations for each AI platform,” Mullenweg told event attendees. “So you can now connect your WordPress installation to popular tools like Claude, Copilot, and many other platforms that support MCP.”

Additionally, he noted that developers were already using AI in their daily workflow through tools like Cursor, Cloud Code, and other next-generation command-line interfaces (CLIs). “This means you can refactor projects, dig into code bases, and automate tasks,” Mullenweg said. Mullenweg said that in 2026, WordPress will offer some benchmarks and evaluations that AI models can use to test WordPress tasks, such as changing plugins, editing text, or even manipulating the WordPress interface using browser agents.
