Most other 30-man rosters feature mainly minor league players with a few stars. Of the 600 total players, roughly half belong to MLB teams, with 190 players currently on MLB rosters.
They include a record 78 players selected to the All-Star team, with 36 selected last year. The United States has the most stars, but the Dominican Republic and Venezuela have at least 12.
Juan Soto plays for the New York Mets under the most lucrative contract in world sport – worth a staggering $765m (£600m) – and will captain the 2013 champions while Ronald Acuna Jr. will star in Venezuela.
The Czechs are the only team without an MLB-affiliated player, but they once again have Ondrej Satoria, the electrician who won the four-time MVP Ohtani Award in 2023.
Ohtani will not play as the two-way star continues his recovery from elbow surgery and the Los Angeles Dodgers agreed to release teammate Yoshinobu Yamamoto because they “understand how important the WBC is to everyone in Japan.”
“I’m in good shape, so I can pitch in the WBC and get ready for the Dodgers’ home opener,” added the 27-year-old pitcher, who was the Series’ MVP as he and Ohtani helped the Dodgers win the World Series last year.
Nolan Arenado has switched allegiance from Team USA to Puerto Rico, which will include pitcher Edwin Diaz, while Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran will pitch for Mexico, and Australia will be led by Travis Bazana, the first overall pick of the 2024 MLB Draft.
With baseball’s return to the Olympics, the two top-ranked teams from the Americas will qualify for Los Angeles 2028, along with the host United States.
