Golovkin won an Olympic silver medal in the middleweight category at the 2004 Athens Games.
He also held world and Asian titles as an amateur before ascending to the professional ranks, where he held a world middleweight title and is widely considered one of the fiercest competitors of his generation.
Although he has not officially retired, he has not fought since losing the third fight of his trilogy with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in September 2022.
The only blemishes on his 45-fight record are two defeats to Mexican Alvarez after a controversial draw in their first encounter which many believe Golovkin won.
He told the World Boxing Congress that his presidency will be based on four main points: putting athletes first, integrity, innovation, financial stability and development.
The International Olympic Committee suspended the IBA in 2019 over governance, financial, arbitration and ethics concerns.
“It’s about unity,” Golovkin said as he expanded on his plan for boxing’s future as an Olympic sport.
“Today we take a big step forward. We must be a federation that athletes can believe in and the Olympic family can trust.”
Van der Vorst was elected in 2023 but chose to step down and did not seek a second term.
