FIFA appears to have ruled out moving Iran’s World Cup matches this summer to Mexico from the United States.
The head of the Iranian Football Federation had said that negotiations were underway to move the matches in order to ensure the safety of the players.
This comes amid American and Israeli strikes on Iran, which responded with attacks on Israel and countries allied with the United States in the Gulf.
However, FIFA said on Tuesday in a statement that it looked forward to the countries competing “according to the fixture schedule.”
The United States co-hosts the World Cup, which will be held from June 11 to July 19, with Canada and Mexico.
Iran is scheduled to face New Zealand on June 16, Belgium on June 21, both in Los Angeles, and Egypt in Seattle on June 27.
US President Donald Trump said last week that although Iran was “welcome to the World Cup,” he did not believe it was “appropriate” for them to attend “for their lives and safety.”
“When Trump explicitly stated that he cannot guarantee the security of the Iranian national team, we will definitely not travel to America,” Iranian Football Federation President Mehdi Taj said in a post., external On a social media account belonging to the Iranian Embassy in Mexico.
He added: “We are negotiating with FIFA to hold Iran’s World Cup matches in Mexico.”
A FIFA spokesperson said: “FIFA is in regular contact with all participating member associations, including Iran, to discuss planning for the World Cup.
“FIFA looks forward to all participating teams competing according to the match schedule announced on 6 December 2025.”
