World Cup host Mexico has announced plans to deploy nearly 100,000 security personnel to protect fans at this summer’s tournament, amid ongoing drug gang violence in the country.
Mexico, which is hosting the World Cup alongside the United States and Canada, will hold World Cup matches in three cities, including Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco, where violence began last month and more than 12,000 people were reported missing.
Mexico will also host matches in Mexico City and Monterrey, which have not seen violence, when the World Cup is held from June 11 to July 19.
The Jalisco New Generation Drug Cartel (CJNG), one of the country’s most feared criminal organizations, has engaged in a shootout with the Mexican Army, blocking roads and burning vehicles in retaliation for the killing of its leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes – known as “El Mencho” – in a military operation.
El Mencho was Mexico’s most wanted man, and was also wanted by the United States, which placed a $15 million reward for information about him.
He was buried on Monday in a cemetery near the military base in Zapopan. On Friday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum presented her plan to ensure the World Cup is held safely.
FIFA and Sheinbaum insisted the violence would have no impact on the World Cup, where millions of visitors are expected to attend.
Mexico’s “Kukulkan Plan,” named after the Mayan serpent god, covers host cities and nearby tourist destinations, and will oversee the security deployment of “more than 99,000 personnel,” according to the head of the World Cup Coordination Center in Mexico, Roman Villavazo Barrios.
This number includes 20,000 military personnel and 55,000 police officers, in addition to members of private security companies, and includes about 2,500 military and civilian vehicles, 24 aircraft, anti-drone systems, and dogs trained to detect explosives and other materials.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said he feels “very reassured” that Mexico is still able to successfully host World Cup matches.
