However, on Monday, at an event organized by the Madrid Sports Press Association, Spain’s Lausanne also referred to the raucous scenes at the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) final earlier this month.

Morocco talked about the tournament as a trial event for 2030 but it ended in chaotic scenes in the capital, Rabat.

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw, already angry at the decision to disallow a goal for his team in stoppage time at 0-0, took his team off the field after host Morocco were awarded a penalty kick following a VAR check.

There was also disturbance in the stands when Senegal supporters attempted to invade the pitch.

After a delay of around 17 minutes, Brahim ‘Panenka’s’ penalty kick was saved and Senegal went on to win 1-0 in extra time.

A win for Morocco would have seen the country win its first Africa Cup of Nations title since 1976.

“Morocco is really going through a transformation in every sense of the word, with great stadiums,” Lausanne said. “We have to realize what has been done well.

He added, “But in the African Cup of Nations, we witnessed scenes that harm the image of international football.”

FIFA said last year that it was too early to decide where the 2030 World Cup final would be held, saying the host city for the 2026 World Cup final had been revealed just two years before the tournament.
