World Cup: How has the world changed since Scotland were last in the men’s finals?

This Scotland team will feel worth £3 million and more having achieved what they have just achieved. They probably also spent close to that amount on celebrations…

But this is historical. First for a generation and then some.

Aaron Hickey, Lewis Ferguson and Ben Gannon Doak all contributed to the victory that secured them the first qualification of their lives.

Anthony Ralston, Josh Doig, Andy Irving, Conor Barron and George Hirst – all born after 1998 – were part of the bench who stormed the field as chaos erupted. A wounded Billy Gilmore was making his way to join the celebrations.

Lennon Miller, Max Johnstone, Nathan Patterson, Kieron Bowie, Tommy Conway, James Wilson, Ryan Porteous and Cieran Slicker have all been called up recently, all of whom will see Scotland in a World Cup for the first time.

They grew up watching James McFadden, Darren Fletcher, Barry Ferguson, Scott Brown, Kenny Miller and many others in dark blue fail to reach the promised land.

It took 10,011 days to do this.

The celebrations – which will last only a short time – will not have CDs and DVDs providing the backdrop, while the milk needed for tea and coffee to heal liver infections will not cost 34p either.

But, the more things change, the more they stay the same.
