World Cup Qualifiers: Robertson talks about Jota as well as the reaction of McGinn, Tierney, Ferguson and McLean

Scotland captain Andy Robertson He paid tribute to his former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota, who died last summer in a traffic accident.

“I hid it well, but today I was torn,” the 31-year-old said. “I know my age, and this might be my last chance to go to the World Cup.

“I couldn’t get my teammate Diogo Jota out of my mind today. We talked a lot about going to the World Cup because he missed the last match with Portugal and I did that with Scotland. I know he will be smiling at me today.

“I’m so glad it ended this way. This group of boys, this group of staff – it’s the best group I’ve ever been involved with.

“The coach’s speech before the game was unbelievable. He went through the big moments we had. In qualifying for the Euros – he couldn’t quite remember – we were at Wunderbar. ‘Let’s make it another moment,’ he said.”

“We were very emotional. To do this for him, for the staff and all our families, this will be one of the greatest nights of my life.”

“That sums up this team. Never say die. We keep going until the end and in one of the craziest games. We’ve put the country through this, but I’m sure it’s worth it. We’re going to the World Cup.”

Addressing BBC Scotland presenter Kelly Cates, Robertson added: “I can’t wait to get back to Liverpool to have red wine with you.”
