One Mexican fan, who did not wish to be named, showed us proof that he owed more than £8,000 on sales made more than 60 days ago.

“It’s disgusting, they seem to be floundering,” he said.

“I had to transfer money to pay off my credit card.”

Some of those affected told BBC Sport they received an email last month from FIFA requesting bank details, despite previous correspondence stating that refunds would be automatically made to their original payment card.

FIFA’s resale market opened on October 2, allowing most ticket holders to list their seats for the tournament at the price of their choice.

The governing body takes a fee of 15% from both the buyer and the seller.

Although the main ballot for tickets only opened on 11 December, some fans who secured seats in the previous sales phase – before the World Cup draw took place – have already resold tickets on the platform.

Meanwhile, many tickets are also listed on unofficial resale sites.

FIFA warned people against using third-party platforms, insisting its marketplace is “designed to protect against invalid or unauthorized resale”.

Earlier this week, FIFA announced the launch of a small number of “affordable” $60 (£45) tickets for all 104 matches in the tournament.

This came after criticism of ticket prices, with the World Cup final costing £6,615.
