✅ Main takeaway:
Lisa Tertch claimed her first world triathlon title, with Britain’s Beth Potter having to settle for third place overall.
Tertch won the gold medal at the World Triathlon Championships finals in Wollongong, Australia, with a time of 1 hour, 56 minutes and 50 seconds.
The 26-year-old German finished the race 14 seconds behind Italian Bianca Sereni, while Frenchwoman Emma Lombardi was another 12 seconds behind.
Tertsch collected 1,250 points for winning the event, taking her overall tally to 3,886.26 as she leapfrogged defending champion Cassandre Beaugrand (3,577.04) of France and Potter (3,313.18) into the lead.
Potter, an Olympic bronze medalist, was bidding to win the title for a second time, after winning in 2023, but could only finish 16th in the final event.
The 33-year-old Scot was joint-leader with Beaugrand before the event started, but Tertch, who was running fourth, produced an impressive performance to take the win.
Beaugrande lost ground early in the 10km race, in hot and windy conditions, while Potter failed to keep up with the leading group – allowing Tertch to capitalize on her advantage on a steep course.
In the men’s event, Australian Matt Hauser capped off a dominant season as he won gold in a time of 1:42:42 for his first world title success.
Hauser finished the race with 4,250 points, comfortably ahead of Brazilian Miguel Hidalgo and Portuguese Vasco Vilaca.
