Tottenham may be feeling more confident this season under Ho, but their Premier League record against Arsenal offers little reason for optimism.
Of the 11 North London derbies, Tottenham have won just once.
However, this one win – a 1-0 win in December 2023 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – is enough to serve as a source of belief.
“We have a great chance in the north London derby to do what we did before,” England said. “I know we’ve only beaten them once before, but it’s not impossible.”
His players don’t need him “to tell them how important this game is,” Ho says.
“They know it. It’s my first time,” he added. “I know how important it is for the fans and the club and we want to make sure we go into it with the right attitude and the right mentality, but it’s a really big opportunity for us to showcase what we can do.”
However, Sunday’s game will not be Hugh’s first experience of the competition, having seen Tottenham beat Arsenal 4-3 in pre-season, in his second match.
Asked about that pre-season match by BBC London, he replied: “I wish they mattered a lot but they don’t. We can take some confidence and belief from that, that we belong at this level and we can compete at this level.”
A rare Tottenham win in the derby could hurt Arsenal’s title ambitions as it would leave them at least six points behind leaders Manchester City, who could extend their advantage with victory over Manchester United on Saturday.
Arsenal will seek a comeback after squandering a two-goal lead during their 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Women’s Champions League on Wednesday.
“That was really disappointing and we acknowledged that as a group,” Arsenal coach Rene Sligers said.
“The players will use this as fuel to go to the north London derby.”
